Proposed Washington County Veteran’s Memorial

The Washington County Veteran’s Memorial will be located at 854 Main Street on the wall connected to the building which houses the Washington County Historical Society Museum.  This site was chosen not only because it is at the intersection of two major roads but also for the convenience and affordability that utilizing the existing structure will bring to the project.

There will need to be some deconstruction of elements of the wall, such as the removal of the barbed wire that runs along the top of it. The wall will then require refurbishing and  need to be refinished before the Memorial verbiage, mural and plaques can be added.  The west-facing wall also has a “green” area that can be used for seating.  The plans will also include the addition of solar lighting along the top of the wall, a flagpole with appropriate lighting and benches for seating.  There area also plans to sell memorial bricks, which could be used in the area between the wall and the coping on the north-facing wall and a courtyard effect on the west.  This feature will give an additional source of revenue to fund the project.

The proposed mural would feature silhouettes of soldiers depicting different service branches and/or wars.  We hope to offer this as a community project with volunteers helping to paint t he fill after the outlines for the silhouettes have been drawn.  This type of mural has the benefit of being easily maintained.
